Making your own deodorant is life-changing and it’s so simple that anyone can do it.

I first started making own batches when I was living in Chile, a little over three years ago. At the time, I was volunteering at a hostel and trying to stretch out what little savings I had left, so that I could return to Brazil for carnival 6 months later. Between giving private English classes and hosting events at the hostel, I wasn’t able to earn much money, which meant I needed to save where I could. Meals became a strategical endeavor* and cosmetics, a luxury I could no longer bear to afford.

So I started making my own.

How Will Making Your Own Deodorant Change Your Life?

In my previous post, 1 Simple Way to Be Less Wasteful {For Home & Away}, you’ll find a detailed answer to that question.

The Deodorant Recipe

Prep Time: ~20 minutes

Ingredients:

1/3 c. Coconut Oil

3 Tbsp Beeswax (grated or pellets)

2 Tbsp Shea Butter

1/3 c. Arrowroot Powder

2 Tbsp Baking Soda

10-15 Drops Essential Oils (optional: Lavender and Tea Tree Oil are excellent choices)

Instructions:

  1. Melt coconut oil, beeswax, and shea butter in a small saucepan over low heat. Stir continuously until all is melted.
  2. Once completely melted, remove from heat and whisk in arrowroot powder and baking soda. Then, add EOs. Mix thoroughly and quickly as mixture will start to thicken.
  3. Pour into empty deo containers, small jars, or whatever other receptacle you have cleaned and available to use. Allow deodorant to sit until completely set.

Notes:

  • Coconut oil isn’t for everyone. Some people are allergic against it and depending on your skin type, hair composition and method of hair removal (if you have one), it could contribute to clogged pored which would lead to more ingrown hairs.
  • If arrowroot powder is unavailable or hard to find, try cornstarch; it works just as well.
  • For those with sensitive skin: The more baking soda used, the more likely it is to break out in a rash. So when preparing, be aware of how much you are using. That way if you break out, you’ll know that in your next batch, you’ll need to use less baking soda.
  • Deodorant should be stored in a dry, cool place to keep the oils from separating or hardening.
